UK will recognise Palestinian state in September, says David Lammy

UK foreign secretary on timing of recognising Palestinian state

London: British Foreign Minister David Lammy has announced the support of Palestine state and its recognition in United Nations General Assembly.

He said the solution of two-state is in danger and the situation of the ground is constantly worsening, it needs urgent and bold action.

David Lammy said, “The United Kingdom has a responsibility to support the Palestinian state. We must make this crucial decision under the weight of history”. He emphasized that the two-state solution is the only path to sustainable peace, and saving it is a moral and political responsibility of the international community, including the UK.

Criticizing Israel’s policies, the British Foreign Secretary said, “Israel’s opposition to the two-state solution is morally wrong. This policy is also against the interests of the Israeli people themselves.”

He made it clear that the UK supports the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and will take practical steps to formally recognize Palestine as a state at the United Nations.

The British Foreign Secretary’s statement comes at a time when the situation in the Middle East is at a critical juncture, and the international community is seeking a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

On the other side Palestinians welcome UK’s decision to recognize statehood.

Palestinian leaders hailed Britain’s announcement Tuesday that it intends to recognize the State of Palestine during a UN General Assembly meeting in September, describing the move as a reaffirmation of its commitment to international law.

“We welcome the United Kingdom’s announcement of its intention to recognize the State of Palestine in September,” Vice President of Palestine Hussein al-Sheikh wrote on X.

He called the step “a confirmation of its commitment to international law and legitimacy and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state, which ensures the protection of the two-state solution.”

Al-Sheikh also said the British declaration “constitutes a serious contribution to consolidating security and stability and achieving peace in the region.”

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates issued a statement praising British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement, describing it as “a courageous step that places the UK on the right side of history.”
