Tarbela spillways opened to ease water pressure


ISLAMABAD:

The spillways of Tarbela Dam were opened on Saturday night after water level at the dam reached 1,546 feet — 96% of its capacity.

With the opening of the spillways, the water flow at the River Indus increased to almost 250,000 cusecs. In view of the increase in the flow, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advised residents of adjacent areas to avoid going near water channels.

Before opening of the spillways, the NDMA informed all relevant departments. It also urged residents of low-lying areas to remain cautious and cooperate with the local administration.

According to a statement issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab on Saturday, the water level at Mangla Dam was 1,205.25 feet and it was 63% full.

In the Indus River, there was a low-level flood at Chashma Barrage, while the flow at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Taunsa, Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri Barrages was normal. At key points of the Jhelum, Sutlej, and Kabul rivers, water flow was normal.

At important locations on the Chenab River and its adjoining streams, water flow was normal. In the Ravi River, water flow was normal at main points, while its adjoining Basantar Nullah was maintaining a low-level flood.

There was no water flow in major hill torrents in the Koh-e-Suleman area of Dera Ghazi Khan Division. The PDMA director general urged citizens to take precautionary measures during the monsoon season.

Section 144 has been imposed around rivers, canals, and streams.

The authority has advised people not to swim in rivers, canals, or ponds under any circumstances, the statement added.
