Sindh govt suspends DG SBCA after Lyari building collapse

KARACHI: The Sindh government has suspended the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and announced compensation for the victims’ families.

Addressing a press conference, Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, stated that the families of the 27 people who lost their lives in the incident will receive Rs. 1 million each in compensation.

He further assured that the provincial government is taking all possible measures to ensure law and order and to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Sharjeel Memon said that strict action will be taken against those responsible for the incident and the Fact Finding Committee will submit its report within two days, after which immediate action will be initiated.

He further said that the DG SBCA has been suspended while the Chief Minister has issued orders to register cases against those involved while the Chief Minister has also called for an important meeting in this regard today.

Minister Saeed Ghani has announced that each affected family from the Lyari building collapse will receive Rs. 1 million in financial assistance.

He added that if negligence by the suspended SBCA Director General is proven, legal action will be initiated against him.

Ghani emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling illegal constructions, stating that stricter laws are being introduced, and a two-week timeline has been set for proposing amendments to existing building regulations to prevent future incidents.
