Saudi Arabia’s epic film on Khalid ibn al-Walid enters shooting phase

Saudi Arabia is fast-tracking the production of a monumental film on the legendary Islamic commander Khalid ibn al-Walid (RA), now officially entering the shooting phase.

Tentatively titled “The Unbroken Sword”, the project is being hailed as the largest and most expensive cinematic production ever undertaken in the Arab world.

The past year has seen intensive preparations, with sprawling sets meticulously designed to reflect historical authenticity.

Costumes, armor, cavalry gear, and weaponry from the 7th century are being crafted with exceptional precision to ensure that every scene resonates with realism.

The production is managed by Saudi events company Sela, under the supervision of the General Entertainment Authority and Riyadh Season.

Renowned Hollywood director Aliq Sakharov, famous for Game of Thrones, Ozark, and House of Cards, is directing the project. Globally acclaimed producer Richard Sharkey is also part of the team, alongside international creative and technical experts.

Filming will take place at the newly built Al-Hisn Big Time Studios and Qadiyah Studios. The scale of production is being compared to Ridley Scott’s historical epics, featuring massive sets, advanced visual effects, and high-octane battle sequences.

Reports suggest that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Robert Rodat may have been associated with the project at some stage, though no official confirmation exists.

The film centers on Khalid ibn al-Walid’s military campaigns, especially the decisive Battle of Yarmouk, which changed the course of Islamic history.

Known as Saifullah (Sword of Allah), Khalid is celebrated for his courage, strategic genius, and undefeated record.

Turki Al-Sheikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, recently visited the studios to review sets, models, and costumes, confirming the project has now entered a critical phase of production.

The Unbroken Sword is part of Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to elevate the country’s film industry to global standards and showcase Saudi cultural identity worldwide. The film is expected to set a new benchmark in Arab cinema
