Roma Riaz shines at Miss Universe preliminaries, draped in Pakistan’s flag

Wrapped proudly in Pakistan’s flag, Roma Riaz made a commanding appearance at the Miss Universe 2025 preliminaries in Thailand, transforming her walk on the global stage into a bold celebration of Pakistani identity and cultural pride.

After her performance, the Miss Universe Pakistan delegate shared an emotional message with her supporters back home a tribute filled with gratitude, resilience, and national pride.

Taking to Instagram, Roma wrote, “Shukriya Pakistan, from the deepest part of my heart,” describing the moment she stepped off the stage as “exhaling a prayer.” She thanked Pakistanis around the world for their constant encouragement despite the harsh skin tone criticism she faced earlier this month.

Highlighting the country’s cultural richness and diversity, Roma said she carried Pakistan in every outfit she wore during the competition. Her burkini, she explained, was intentionally chosen to honour Pakistan’s culture and majority Muslim identity, serving as a respectful tribute to the nation’s values.

She further shared that her national costume showcased the brilliance of Pakistani artisans and paid homage to Lahore’s historic Sheesh Mahal, symbolised through mirror work and intricate detailing.

Meanwhile, her evening gown was created to represent the pride of Pakistani Christians and other minority communities, reflecting the nation’s multi-faith heritage.

“It wasn’t just fabric,” she wrote. “It was faith, identity, and the story of a girl who dared to dream on behalf of millions of Pakistanis.”

Roma also addressed the wave of criticism surrounding her complexion, stating confidently that her skin is “the same colour as the soil of Pakistan.” She spoke about the deeply rooted issue of colourism, saying it has conditioned societies to glorify fairness while ignoring authentic identity.

Roma said she represents a new generation of South Asian women who refuse to fit into outdated beauty standards.

Concluding her message, she thanked her supporters again, saying she stood on the Miss Universe stage not with perfection, but with courage, authenticity, and the real spirit of Pakistan.
