Robert Irwin credits Russell Crowe for bringing him closer to late dad Steve
Robert Irwin was just two years old when his father, beloved wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin, tragically passed away. Now 21 years old, Robert has never felt closer to his dad, thanks in large part to Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe.
While attending the premiere of Crowe’s film Nuremberg at the 2025 AFI Fest on October 24, Robert told People magazine that Crowe, 61, has been instrumental in keeping his dad’s memory alive after he tragically passed away in 2006 at the age of 44.
“I’ve known him for as long as I’ve been alive,” Robert revealed, recalling early childhood moments shared with both Crowe and his father, who were “best mates.“
Robert — who recently paid tribute to both his parents on Dancing With the Stars —said that Crowe gives him a fresh perspective on his father’s legacy.
“He’s actually been there to, in a way, keep my dad alive in my life,” he shared. “He has so many stories to share of him and dad, and I feel like I build an even better picture of my dad when I’m around Russell.”
Robert explained that Crowe’s friendship with his father offers insight even his family — including mum Terri — can’t provide.
Having picked up his dad’s mission from an early age, he recently reflected, “To continue this legacy is the honour of my life. If I can make my dad proud, I’ve done my job.“
He added, “Behind everything I do is a conservation mission that my dad started.“
