Punjab bans dumping of industrial waste into canals

LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed a ban on the disposal of toxic industrial waste into canals and drains and has decided to shut down housing societies operating without waste treatment plants.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. The meeting also approved action against industrial units and housing societies found violating environmental regulations.

Additionally, a deadline of August 10 has been set for the cleaning of the Hadyara Drain, and it was decided that fines and penalties for environmental violations will be enforced without delay.

The meeting was banned from throwing toxic waste and materials from the industries to canals and drains.

In addition, it was decided to lend interest to the industries for the installation of Waste Treatment Plants.

Maryam Aurangzeb directed that the waste water plant be installed in Quaid -e -Azam Industrial Estate and a full health survey should be presented by August 31, the meeting was told that toxic industrial waste could spread cholera, typhoid and lung cancer.

In addition, notices were also issued to 28 housing societies and industries if there was no waste treatment plants.
