Prince Albert has just announced that Monaco will be the home for a major sporting event in 2026, and it is being called a new chapter in the Principality’s sporting history, as well as “a testament to its commitment to major international cycling events.”

For those unversed with the event in question it is the Grand Départ of the Vuelta a España.

According to the official website, “Running from 22 August to 13 September 2026, La Vuelta 26 will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,275 kilometers.” With “4 hilly stages, 1 hilly, uphill finale stage, 4 flat stages, 4 medium mountains stages, 6 mountain stages, 2 individual time trial stages and 2 rest days.”

Monaco will also be Stage one in the event, and will be the individual time trial.

During the actual event where the announcement was made, the prince is said to have “reiterated the close and enduring relationship between the Principality and cycling.”

Moreover, “after hosting the start of the Giro d’Italia in 1966 and the Tour de France in 2009, Monaco will be the venue for the Grand Départ of the Vuelta a España in August 2026,” according to the official Instagram account.
