Opposition needs 20 more for majority in KP Assembly

PESHAWAR: The opposition alliance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is now just 20 members away from securing a simple majority in the provincial assembly.

Following the Supreme Court’s verdict, the Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) restored the reserved seats, raising the opposition’s strength to 53 members. Meanwhile, the ruling PTI holds 92 seats in the KP Assembly.

Out of the total 145 seats, 115 are elected members, while 26 are reserved for women and 4 for minorities.

In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, seven elected members of JUI-F got 10 women, 2 minority members, 19. Six elected members of the PML -N get 9 reserved seats, the number has increased to 15.

The number of elected members of the PPP was 4, 6 women and a minority seat increased to 11.

The PTI parliamentarian had 2 seats in the House, with a specific seat to 3. With a specific seat, the number of Awami National Party has also increased to 3.

Hisham Aamir Ullah and Ali Hadi are independent members in the House, but the two support the opposition coalition.

The simple majority in the House will need the support of 73 members. The opposition coalition needs 20 members to gain a simple majority.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly said that with the increased number of opposition members, they are now 18 to 20 members short of a simple majority.

He clarified that the opposition has not yet made any formal decision regarding forming the government. However, during the budget speech, he did state that “this is PTI’s 12th and final budget.”

He further added, “If the government focuses on governance and law and order, we have no desire to destabilize it.”
