NCIS has marked a major milestone with a significant character departure during its 500th episode, ending an 18-year run for Director Leon Vance.
The long-running CBS drama delivered the development in its latest episode, where Rocky Carroll’s character is killed off in a storyline centred on betrayal rather than a conventional action sequence. The episode opens with the agency facing a crisis as operations are shut down amid a growing scandal.
Vance remains determined to protect the organisation, even as a bomb threat emerges. However, the danger proves to be misleading, as the real threat comes from within. An Army CID agent working alongside Vance is revealed to be part of a smuggling ring connected to a wider conspiracy under investigation.
The turning point occurs when the agent shoots Vance. Although initial scenes suggest he may survive due to a bulletproof vest, it is later revealed that the injury is fatal. In a final sequence, Vance appears in conversation with an interrogator, later shown to be a younger version of Dr. “Ducky” Donald Mallard representing the Angel of Death.
Executive producer Steven D. Binder said, “It is never easy to say goodbye to any of our characters,” adding, “But we wanted to honor Rocky and his legacy on the show as best as we could — in this case, giving his life so his agency could live.”
Binder also noted, “There have always been real stakes,” referencing earlier major character losses in the series.
Carroll accepted the storyline, explaining it was presented as a significant narrative moment. “It was basically presented to me that the studio and the network wanted to do something really spectacular, really big, and something that would really send shockwaves through the NCIS fan base and the community.”
The episode concludes with the agency reinstated, but the team moving forward without Vance.
