Melania documentary flops before box office release

A documentary based on the life of former US First Lady Melania Trump has reportedly failed to generate interest even before its official release in the United States and the United Kingdom, according to early box office indicators.

The documentary, produced with an estimated budget of $75 million, is scheduled for release on January 30. However, reports suggest that many cinemas in major cities such as New York and London have seen little to no advance ticket sales. In several theaters, not a single ticket was sold for opening-day shows, while only a handful of seats were booked in others.

The film reportedly focuses on events from 20 days before President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Media reports claim that Melania Trump was paid $28 million for her role in the documentary. Amazon is said to have acquired the rights for $40 million and spent an additional $35 million on marketing, promotion, and distribution.

Melania Trump has stated that the documentary reveals previously unknown aspects of her life, including how she manages her business ventures, charitable activities, family responsibilities, and her role in establishing the East Wing. However, the project has drawn criticism and mockery from commentators, with one US host joking that the historic East Wing no longer exists, as it is reportedly being demolished to make way for a ballroom.

Despite promotion on Donald Trump’s social media platform, including calls for supporters to watch the film, attendance remains low. Reports indicate that even prime-time screenings in major cinemas at New York’s Times Square failed to sell a single $25 ticket.

Images of empty theaters have since circulated widely on social media, turning what was intended to be a high-profile release into a source of embarrassment. Industry estimates suggest the documentary may earn only $1–2 million in its opening week.

Adding to the controversy, several members of the production team have reportedly distanced themselves from the project, labeling it a “propaganda film.” Some crew members allegedly requested the removal of their names from the end credits due to fears of reputational damage.

The documentary’s poor reception ahead of the midterm elections has led some social media users to view its failure as an unfavorable sign for Donald Trump.
