Megan Thee Stallion gets candid about mental health and needing therapy

Megan Thee Stallion has shared a candid reflection on her mental health journey, opening up about the moment she realised she needed therapy.

The Houston-born rapper joined actress Taraji P. Henson at the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation’s inaugural I Am the Table Benefit Brunch in Maryland on October 12, where she discussed her struggles with grief and burnout.

“Through all of that grief, I was just working and trying to be the best Megan I could be,” she said, becoming emotional during the conversation. “And I didn’t know I needed therapy until one day, I was just like, ‘Damn, I’m really sad, and it’s really scary how sad I am.’ And it was like, I didn’t care what happened to me. And I didn’t want to feel like that, like I should care about my life.”

Megan’s mother, Holly Thomas, died in 2019 after a battle with a brain tumour, a loss that deeply affected the artist.

The following year, she faced further trauma after being shot by Tory Lanez in July 2020. The lengthy and public trial that followed subjected her to intense scrutiny, but Megan has since turned her pain into purpose by becoming a strong advocate for mental health awareness.

Earlier this year, the Trevor Project honoured Megan with its 2025 Mental Health Champion Award. “My goal has always been to use my platform to help break stigmas around mental health and provide resources for those seeking safe spaces to have honest and heartfelt conversations,” she said.

In 2022, she launched the Bad B—hes Have Bad Days Too website, offering mental health resources and crisis hotlines, and later supported the Seize the Awkward campaign to encourage open dialogue around wellbeing.
