Meat prices have increased sharply in Karachi and Lahore even though there were expectations that prices might go down due to lower exports linked to tensions in the Middle East.
In Karachi, mutton is now being sold for up to Rs2,700 per kilogram, showing an increase of around Rs300. Veal with bones is available between Rs1,400 and Rs1,500 per kg, while boneless veal has reached Rs1,800 per kg. Beef prices have also gone up and are now ranging between Rs1,350 and Rs1,500 per kg.
In Lahore, prices are even higher, with mutton being sold between Rs2,800 and Rs3,200 per kilogram. Beef in different markets is priced between Rs1,200 and Rs1,600 per kg, showing a clear rise in rates.
These prices are higher than the official rates set earlier by the Karachi commissioner, and many shopkeepers are not following the official price lists or displaying them.
Traders say the increase in diesel and LPG prices has raised transportation and business costs, which has affected meat prices. Some also point to a shortage of animals, especially goats, in the market.
Demand has also gone up before Eid al-Fitr and remains high due to the ongoing wedding season, which is further pushing prices up.
Experts say that if prices continue to stay high, it could also affect the cost of sacrificial animals before Eid al-Adha, depending on market conditions and people’s buying power.
Industry representatives say exports make up only a small part of total consumption, which means local supply issues are a major reason behind rising prices. There are also concerns about the slaughter of female animals, which could affect future production and food security.
With food inflation expected to increase in the coming months, people may continue to face higher meat prices across the country.
