Makkah to launch one way railway system to historic cave of “Ghar-e-Soor” by 2025
Makkah, Saudi Arabia: Saudi authorities have launched a groundbreaking monorail project to improve access to the historic Cave of Ghar-e-Soor, a site of immense significance in Islamic history.
The cave, located in the rugged hills near Makkah, is famously known as the place where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA) took refuge during the Hijrah to Madinah.
Currently, reaching the cave requires a two-hour uphill trek. However, with the new monorail system, this journey will be reduced to just three minutes, making it significantly easier for pilgrims of all ages and physical abilities.
Officials have confirmed that trial operations for the monorail are expected to begin in November 2025. Once operational, the project will not only ease the physical challenge of visiting the cave but also allow pilgrims to explore other important Hijrah-related sites in less time.
The initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader effort to enhance religious tourism and ensure that pilgrims from around the world can conveniently visit key Islamic landmarks during their stay in the Kingdom.
