Makeup artist comes forward as Jim Carrey impersonator after viral César Awards appearance

Alexis Stone claims he impersonated Jim Carrey at the Cesar Awards amid ‘clone’ conspiracy theories
Jim Carrey’s appearance at the 2026 César FIlm Awards has sparked widespread debate after makeup artist and drag performer Alexis Stone claimed he was behind the actor’s look on the night.
Stone alleged that he impersonated Carrey during the comedian’s February 26 appearance in Paris, following online speculation that the actor looked “different” and, according to some viewers, “unrecognisable”.
Posting on Instagram, Stone wrote, “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” alongside photographs of Carrey at the event and an image of a mask, teeth and a dark wig resembling the actor’s new straight black hairstyle.
The claim quickly divided social media users. Some followers appeared convinced, with one writing, “The conspiracy theorists have had a FIELD DAY because of you” and another commenting, “Man no way, I knew it!!! Jim it’s probably laughing out loud now.”
Others expressed scepticism. “He’s playing y’all because Alexis didn’t step out as Jim lol,” one user said, while another added, “I’ll believe it when the video is out,” referring to Stone’s detailed YouTube transformation reveals. A number of commenters also suggested the mask image could have been generated using artificial intelligence.
Carrey accepted an honorary award at the ceremony and delivered his speech entirely in French, performing his signature animated facial expressions on stage. Observers noted that such expressions would be difficult to achieve while wearing a prosthetic mask, raising doubts about the impersonation claim.
Stone is known for highly detailed celebrity transformations, previously recreating figures including Glenn Close, Anna Wintour and Donatella Versace. Carrey’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment regarding the claim.
