The project, produced in partnership with Studiocanal, follows a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. The story is described as dream-like in tone. Patricia Clarkson is also attached to star.

Scorsese will direct and produce through Sikelia Productions. The screenplay has been adapted by Patrick Marber from the novel of the same name by Peter Cameron.

Mikkelsen is widely recognised for his performances in Another Round, which won the Academy Award for Best International Feature, as well as The Hunt, Casino Royale, Doctor Strange and Riders of Justice. He is also known for his lead role in the television series Hannibal.

His recent film credits include Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Promised Land, and voicing Kiros in Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King. Upcoming projects include the dark comedy The Last Viking and the action thriller Sirius.
