KW&SC begins emergency repairs on major K-II pipeline
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) has launched emergency repair operations on a critical section of the K-II water supply line at the North East Pumping Station, following the detection of a major leak in the 48-inch diameter rising main.
On Monday, a Spokesperson for the KW&SC confirmed that urgent repair work is already underway, with teams working in continuous 24-hour shifts to minimize the disruption. The repair includes replacement of a key valve along the K-II main line. Officials aim to complete the restoration within 48 hours.
As part of the emergency response, three of the eleven pumps at the North East Pumping Station have been temporarily shut down. Additionally, one pump at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has also been taken offline for maintenance-related needs.
KW&SC has cautioned that water supply will be temporarily suspended in several major areas, including Safora Town, North Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, Liaquatabad Town, and parts of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Residents have been urged to store water and use it sparingly during the repair period.
Despite the temporary disruption, the KW&SC says Karachi will still receive 500 million gallons per day (MGD) of water during the repairs—down from the usual 650 MGD—as efforts continue to limit the impact on the city’s residents.
“We understand the inconvenience this causes and appreciate the public’s cooperation,” the spokesperson said, assuring that the repair teams are working around the clock to restore full supply as soon as possible.
