‘KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel slated for 2029 release on Netflix

The movie became Netflix’s most popular movie of all time, months after its release on the platform
Netflix and Sony have established a deal for a second instalment of the mega-hit animated musical KPop Demon Hunters set to be released in 2029, Bloomberg reports.
While the film’s production schedule remains tentative, a four-year interval between instalments is standard for animated movies which take longer to produce.
Produced and developed by Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters centers Huntr/x, a fictional K-pop girl group who protect the world from demons with their music. Since Sony signed a licensing deal with Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters became the streamer’s most popular movie of all time, months after its release on the platform.
Meanwhile, three of its original songs namely, “Golden,” “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop” keep dominating Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with potential nods at the upcoming Grammys and Oscars.
Creators Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans who were onboard with a sequel spoke to Variety in July and said, “We’ve set up so much for potential backstory,” adding that “there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored”.
After its success on streaming, Netflix brought a sing-along version of the movie to theaters in August and October where the film accumalated around $18 million over two days and $6 million on Halloween respectively.
