John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980, by Mark David Chapman outside his home at the Dakota in New York City.

The legendary musician was struck five times as he returned from a recording session with his wife, Yoko Ono.

As fans know, John Winston Ono Lennon was not only an English singer and songwriter, but the founder, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles, and a global peace activist whose influence still echoes today.

Now, according to a new report from RadarOnline.com, Lennon’s “real” final words are set to be examined in a new documentary from filmmaker Steven Soderbergh.

Reportedly, The project will delve into one of Lennon’s eeriest remarks, captured by producer Laurie Kaye earlier that day.

The RKO recording is believed to preserve the last sustained reflections Lennon intended the world to hear, as opposed to the shocked utterance he made moments after being shot.

Soderbergh explained, “I’m not looking to re-invent the form [of documentary]. I’m just hoping to create a film that gets as many people as possible to hear what John and Yoko had to say on that afternoon before he was killed.”

The filmmaker, 62, added of the RKO tapes, “They were both so free in their discussions… You would think they had never been interviewed before.”

A source close to the project dished further, “Hearing John say that, when knowing what happened hours later, is devastating.”

“Those really were his final thoughts as he understood them – not something blurted out in panic, but what he genuinely believed,” they concluded.
