Is coffee helpful for digestion? Experts explain

Coffee can help improve digestion, but its effects vary from person to person and depend on timing, experts say.

According to nutrition expert Dr Emily Leeming, caffeine in coffee stimulates bowel movements and helps move food through the digestive system more efficiently. This may be particularly beneficial for people with slower digestion.

However, individuals suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or sensitive digestive systems may experience discomfort, as coffee can speed up digestion and trigger symptoms.

Research also suggests that regular coffee consumption may support gut health by promoting beneficial bacteria in the intestines. Coffee contains polyphenols and small amounts of fiber that help nourish these healthy microbes.

Experts advise paying attention to timing, as caffeine can remain in the body for up to 12 hours and may disturb sleep. Poor sleep can negatively affect digestion and eating habits.

Dr Leeming recommends consuming coffee before the afternoon and switching to decaffeinated coffee or herbal tea later in the day to support both digestion and sleep.
