In a high-profile intersection of sport and geopolitics, Iranian footballers Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh have commenced training with Brisbane Roar following their recent request for asylum in Australia.
Their move has drawn significant international attention, highlighting the precarious position of athletes caught between national pressures and personal safety.
The pair were part of Iran’s contingent at the Women’s Asian Cup who, last week, sought sanctuary after being branded “traitors” for refusing to sing the national anthem at their opening match.
While the majority of the delegation later returned to Iran, Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh opted to remain in Australia, citing concerns for their safety and autonomy.
Human rights groups have criticized Tehran for reportedly exerting coercive pressure on athletes abroad, including threats to relatives and potential seizure of property for those who defect or voice dissent. Iranian authorities, conversely, have accused Australia of unduly influencing the players’ decision to stay.
In response, Brisbane Roar welcomed the two athletes into their women’s squad, emphasizing the club’s commitment to a supportive and secure environment.
“Brisbane Roar is proud to provide a platform for Fatemeh and Atefeh to train, play, and continue their development in a safe environment,” said Chief Executive Kaz Patafta.
Adding a note of optimism, Pasandideh shared a photograph on social media alongside Jill Ellis, FIFA’s chief football officer, captioned: “Everything will be fine.”
Currently, both players are residing at a confidential location and are receiving assistance from the Australian government and members of the Iranian diaspora.
