Instagram has announced that users can now take their Reels experience beyond mobile screens and into the living room.
The social media giant unveiled IG for TV, a groundbreaking new platform allowing users to watch Instagram Reels on their television, launching first on Amazon Fire TV.
This move not only enhances the viewing experience but also positions Instagram as a direct challenger to YouTube’s dominance in the large-screen video space.
IG for TV is designed for moments when viewers prefer short, engaging videos over full-length films or episodes, making content consumption faster, snappier, and more interactive.
The IG for TV experience is highly personalized, curating Reels based on users’ viewing habits, favorite creators, and activity on the main Instagram app. To simplify content discovery, Reels are organized into topical channels such as comedy, music, lifestyle, and other engaging categories.
Users won’t need to manually scroll, as Reels will auto-play, though the option to skip to the next video remains. Viewers can also like, comment, and share directly from the TV interface.
IG for TV allows users to link up to five existing Instagram profiles to one home screen or create a new account specifically for TV viewing.
It’s important to note that IG for TV is entirely distinct from IGTV, Instagram’s previous long-form video app that was shut down in 2022.
The launch comes after Instagram head Adam Mosseri revealed in October that the company was exploring a dedicated TV app. Speaking at Bloomberg’s Screentime event, Mosseri said,

“TV is an increasingly important platform; YouTube and TikTok have leveraged it effectively. We want Instagram to make a strong and compelling presence on all relevant devices.”
He also admitted that not having a TV app sooner was a misstep, but Instagram is now taking a bold and strategic step to capture the large-screen audience with a highly engaging experience.
This launch promises to redefine how users interact with Instagram content, making Reels a central part of living room entertainment worldwide.
