India restricts Reuters’ Official X account in country

New Delhi: The Indian government has blocked the official account of the international news agency “Reuters” on X (formerly Twitter) within the country.

This sudden move has sparked widespread concern among journalistic circles, human rights advocates, and ordinary users.

According to the Newsbytes, the restriction was enforced late Friday or early Saturday, after which users in India attempting to access Reuters’ X account received the message:

“@Reuters has been blocked in India due to legal demands.”

As per The Deccan Chronicle, there has been no official statement or legal basis provided by the Indian government for this decision. Journalists and social media users are calling this move another attack on freedom of expression.

Is This a New level of Censorship?

Analysts suggest that after targeting Pakistani, Kashmiri journalists, and local critics, India is now also targeting international organizations.

This step by the Indian government is being described as an “undeclared emergency,” where authoritarian policies are used to suppress dissenting voices.

Mainstream Media Silent:

There has been no open discussion or impartial reporting in the country’s mainstream media regarding this move by the BJP government.

Critics argue that the so-called “pro-government” media is instead defending these policies rather than questioning them.

International Concerns:

Global organizations advocating for press freedom and human rights are closely monitoring the situation, as restrictions on free speech are tightening in India.

When a reputable agency like Reuters becomes a target of government censorship, it sends a dangerous message worldwide.
