HESCO faces Rs0.1 Million penalty from NEPRA

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has decided to impose a daily fine of Rs. 0.1 million on the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) for carrying out load shedding instead of fixing power losses in its system.

According to NEPRA’s decision, the fine will be charged for each day of load shedding and will apply from April 4, 2024, till now.

NEPRA said HESCO has been resorting to load shedding instead of reducing feeder losses, and also accused the company of trying to hide its line losses. The regulator noted that HESCO failed to give a satisfactory explanation about the power outages.

What NEPRA Does?

NEPRA is Pakistan’s main regulatory body for the power sector. It issues licenses for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity and makes sure power companies follow safety and quality standards.

It also sets electricity tariffs, monitors performance, and handles complaints from consumers. NEPRA’s role is to keep the power sector efficient, stable, and fair while protecting the interests of both power companies and consumers.

What HESCO Does?

HESCO is the electricity distribution company for parts of Sindh, responsible for supplying power to homes, businesses, and industries in its area.

Its job includes managing power lines, metering, billing, and collecting payments from consumers. HESCO is also expected to cut down on power losses and improve its service quality.

However, like many other power companies, HESCO struggles with issues such as power theft, technical losses, and revenue recovery problems. Its performance directly affects the electricity situation in its region.
