Federal govt approves import of up to 500,000 MT sugar

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet has given final approval for the import of 500,000 metric tons of sugar in a bid to stabilize domestic prices.

According to the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the import will be carried out through government channels, and all necessary arrangements have been finalized for immediate implementation.

This decision, the ministry said, represents a strategic shift from past practices. Unlike in previous years, where artificial shortages were allegedly created to justify subsidies, the current approach aims to maintain market balance through transparent and proactive measures.

“The objective is to ensure steady supply and prevent any price manipulation,” the ministry added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar chaired a committee meeting to assess the sugar situation in the country and evaluate import requirements.

The committee approved the import of up to 500,000 metric tons of sugar to ensure a stable supply and maintain affordable prices nationwide.

The deputy PM underscored the government’s commitment to price stability and safeguarding consumer interests.
