Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died aged 53 following complications related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
His family confirmed that the actor died on Thursday afternoon, nearly a year after revealing his diagnosis with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
In a statement shared with multiple outlets, his family said he had “spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world.”
The statement added: “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Dane disclosed his diagnosis in April 2025. In a June 2025 interview with Diane Sawyer, he described first noticing weakness in his right hand. “I didn’t really think anything of it at the time — I thought maybe I’d been texting too much, or my hand was fatigued,” he said.
After months of medical consultations, he received confirmation of ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Reflecting on his family, Dane said: “I’m angry because, you know, my father was taken from me when I was young, and now, you know, there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls while they’re very young. I mean, really, at the end of the day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can.”
Dane rose to prominence as Dr Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy and later portrayed Cal Jacobs in Euphoria. His film credits included X-Men: The Last Stand and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
