Marylin Fitoussi on online jabs at ‘Emily in Paris’ designs: ‘I think fashion is political’

Lily Collins as Emily Cooper slipped into several eye-catching outfits in Emily in many seasons of Emily in Paris.

But her dresses often came under the scanner of some viewers. Now, the designers behind those attires spoke out.

“I think that fashion is political; it carries a message, ideas,” Marylin Fitoussi tells People, adding, “Clothing tells who you are and what you dream of, it is your presentation to the world. I want to have fun with clothes.”

Through her ideas in the show, the designer explains she sought to convey her vision. “Emily in Paris fashion was my way to express my own vision and was meant to fuel your imagination.”

She continues, “My intention wasn’t to make fashion or to create a trend, I did not want to do something cute, politically correct, or perfect. I wanted to create something interesting to look at.”

“You have to dress to please yourself, express yourself, your individuality and not to follow a trend. I’m just passionate and I stay true to my vision. The way I mix patterns and fabrics can be disconcerting, but what I’m trying to do is to provoke new ideas about how pieces can be put together in a different way,” the actress adds.

Marylin notes that she was not bothered by online critiques, stating, “I’m only focusing on what I think is right, different, and interesting for the character regardless of what everybody else is thinking.”

Emily in Paris season five is streaming on Netflix.
