Constitution Amending for 27th time
ISLAMABAD: The new draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment will be sent to the Senate for approval, with the Senate session scheduled today.
A federal cabinet meeting has also been convened this afternoon, where the cabinet is expected to approve changes in laws in line with the constitutional amendments.
The amendment was passed in the National Assembly yesterday with a two-thirds majority, amid protests by the opposition, who tore copies of the bill and boycotted proceedings in front of the Speaker’s dais.
The government secured 234 votes, exceeding the required 224 for approval, while JUI-F voted against the amendment.
The 27th amendment introduces eight new changes, including revisions to Article 6, Clause 2. The clause now explicitly states that acts of high treason cannot be validated by any court, with the term “Constitutional Court” added alongside High Court and Supreme Court.
Additionally, the current Chief Justice will retain the title of Chief Justice of Pakistan until the completion of their term. Afterward, the senior-most judge among the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court will assume the role of Chief Justice of Pakistan.
