Chris Colfer reveals why playing Kurt Hummel in ‘Glee’ became ‘really scary’
Chris Colfer recently got candid and opened up about how Glee helped him achieve overnight recognition.
The 35 American actor, singer, and author appeared on the Syndicate X Library YouTube series Books That Changed My Life, where he reflected on his vault to stardom with his portrayal of Kurt Hummel, “the gay kid,” on the 2009 musical comedy-drama television series.
Voicing his thoughts, Colfer said, “I loved pretending… I loved creating other people, creating characters. I loved storytelling. I never in a million years thought that fame would have any part of my career at all… It got really scary really fast.”
“And I was playing an openly gay teenager at a time when people did not like seeing openly gay teenagers on television… It was not welcome,” he explained. “And the death threats and the security risks started almost immediately. I became very agoraphobic.”
The Marmaduke star went on to state that he struggled to make people understand at that time as compared to now because a lot has changed now.
“It’s hard to explain now because the world has changed for the better so much that sometimes people don’t really believe me… but it was not okay to be gay back then, in the early 2000s,” Colfer noted.
For those unaware, Glee, which debuted on May 19, 2009, concluded after six seasons, airing its final episode on March 20, 2015.
