RAWALPINDI:
The Superintendent of District Jail Attock, Arif Shehbaz, has been removed from his post while five other officers have been suspended following the emergence of a disturbing video showing inmates being tortured under the supervision of jail officials.
According to sources, the video footage — reportedly recorded inside the jail — showed prisoners being brutally assaulted by fellow inmates in the presence of administrative staff.
Inspector General (IG) of Prisons Punjab, Mian Farooq Nazir, took notice of the incident and appointed DIG Prisons Rawalpindi Region, Rana Abdul Rauf, as the inquiry officer.
The investigation revealed how the torture occurred and raised questions about how recording devices made their way into the high-security facility.
Based on the inquiry findings, the IG Prisons submitted a report to the Punjab Home Department.
Following the initial investigation, the home department ordered the immediate removal of Arif Shehbaz, directing him to report to the IG Prisons Office in Lahore.
Ishtiaq Gul has been appointed as the new superintendent, while Sarfraz Haroon has been posted as deputy superintendent executive at Attock Jail.
Additionally, five officials were suspended for negligence and misconduct.
