Afridi expresses frustration over Shaheen’s repeated mistakes

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said the team’s overall mindset remains behind modern cricket standards.

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has openly criticized his son-in-law and national team fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi over his bowling approach, raising concerns about tactical awareness following the recent T20 World Cup.

Speaking during a television program, Afridi questioned Shaheen’s decision-making in crucial moments of the game.

Referring to his performances in the tournament, Afridi remarked, “Shaheen has been playing for so long, yet he still does not seem to understand from where he should bowl the final over. He has been told repeatedly.”

The former skipper further expressed frustration over what he described as repeated mistakes. “Despite being advised multiple times, Shaheen continues to repeat the same errors. When a right-handed batter is on strike, you do not bowl round the wicket — and even if you do, the line must be within the stumps,” he said.

Afridi added that it was difficult to comprehend why the same tactical error was being made again and again. He questioned when Pakistan’s bowlers would develop a better understanding of such fundamental aspects of the game.

Extending his criticism beyond an individual player, Afridi said the team’s overall mindset remains behind modern cricket standards.

“These players are neither learning nor willing to learn. They do not seem eager to take responsibility. They think winning a match is the job of just one or two individuals,” he stated.

He concluded by saying that Pakistan cricket is lagging behind the evolving global game, stressing the need for a more progressive mindset and stronger collective accountability within the team.
