China develops AI capable of abstract thought

BEIJING: In a groundbreaking leap for artificial intelligence, Chinese researchers have unveiled an advanced neural network capable of replicating one of the most complex aspects of human cognition the formation of abstract concepts from raw sensory input such as images and sounds.

This innovation promises to bridge a critical gap between human thought and machine learning, enabling AI systems to reason and generalize beyond pre-existing data.

Developed collaboratively by the Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Peking University, the framework, named CATS Net, integrates a concept-abstraction module with a task-solving module.

This dual-architecture allows the system to autonomously generate new conceptual spaces and perform complex tasks such as recognition, judgment, and decision-making, closely mirroring human cognitive processes.

Unlike traditional AI models that rely heavily on pre-existing linguistic or visual data, CATS Net can independently construct a wide array of concepts and align them across multiple AI systems, facilitating direct knowledge transfer without retraining.

Brain imaging studies conducted during testing revealed that the AI’s concept formation patterns correspond closely with the neural activity in human brain regions responsible for conceptual reasoning.

Experts suggest that this advancement could revolutionize AI applications, enabling machines to process sensory experiences, learn adaptively, and interact with humans more naturally.

Potential applications range from autonomous robotics and medical diagnostics to intelligent education systems and complex decision-making platforms.

According to the researchers, this marks a significant milestone in understanding not only AI capabilities but also the computational mechanisms underlying human thought, bringing machines one step closer to true cognitive intelligence.
