Mexico City prepares for a musical storm as Shakira headlines free concert

The queen of Latin pop is back, and Mexico City is about to feel the magic. Shakira is set to light up the Zócalo square with a massive free concert, promising fans an unforgettable night of music, energy, and nostalgia.

From breaking stadium records to returning to one of the world’s most iconic plazas, the Colombian superstar is ready to reclaim the stage like never before.

The world-renowned artist announced on Friday, in collaboration with the city government, that she will perform at Mexico City’s Zócalo on the night of March 1.

In a video message shared on social media, Shakira recalled her previous performance in 2007, stating, “Beautiful Mexico! Do you remember in 2007 when I sang for you in the Zócalo? Well, I want to tell you that this is going to happen again.”

Shakira has a history of record-breaking performances in the city. During her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (Women Don’t Cry Anymore) world tour, she sold out more than 12 concerts at Estadio GNP, attracting approximately 65,000 fans per night, and selling over 780,000 tickets in total.

She is scheduled to return to the stadium at the end of February, just days before the highly anticipated free concert in the city’s historic central plaza.

Expressing her gratitude to fans, the singer added, “You have given me so much, and I hope I can return to you some of the love you have shown me.”

The Zócalo spans roughly eight football pitches and has previously hosted free concerts by international superstars including Justin Bieber, Rosalía, and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, the latter drawing an estimated 300,000 fans.

Shakira’s free concert had been the subject of speculation since last August, though the city government confirmed at the time that the event had not been scheduled.

Earlier this month, she was also announced as the headliner for this year’s public concert at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach, following in the footsteps of Lady Gaga in 2025 and Madonna in 2024.

The Colombian singer’s latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, achieved Billboard No. 1 on the Latin Album chart and earned her a Grammy Award at the beginning of last year. Shakira’s global reach is further highlighted by her nearly 80 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

In addition to Shakira, Mexico City’s Estadio GNP will host K-pop sensation BTS in May, after unprecedented demand for tickets prompted President Claudia Sheinbaum to seek assistance from South Korea to arrange additional shows.
