Los Angeles: Pixar has released the full trailer for Toy Story 5, offering audiences the first extended look at the return of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the cherished toy ensemble.
Fans quickly took to social media to react to the new footage, which introduces a modern twist to the franchise’s timeless themes.
The trailer confirms that original voice actors Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz, with Joan Cusack returning as Jessie.
A new digital antagonist, Lilypad a frog-shaped smart tablet voiced by Greta Lee emerges as a threat to the toys’ traditional role in Bonnie’s playtime, highlighting the tension between classic toys and contemporary technology.
The narrative centres on the toys’ struggle to maintain relevance in an increasingly screen-dominated world. Woody and Buzz reunite to confront this challenge, teaming up with Jessie, Forky, and other familiar characters to safeguard Bonnie’s imaginative play.
Responses online have been swift and varied. Some fans reacted with humour, one writing, “Can’t wait for Woody x Roblox collab after,” while another commented, “I’ll be taking my nieces and nephews off their iPads to watch this film.”
Several viewers focused on character development, particularly for Buzz Lightyear. One remarked, “Hoping they can restore Buzz from his less engaging portrayal in the previous films,” while another welcomed updates to supporting characters, noting Mr. Potato Head’s recasting.
Others praised the film’s contemporary themes, particularly its exploration of screen time and technology. One fan wrote, “It’s refreshing that the film addresses how excessive tech use affects children’s play.” Another added, “Toy Story 3 was perfect, 4 was surprisingly good, and this looks very promising.”
The trailer opens with Bonnie happily playing until Lilypad is unboxed, immediately capturing her attention and creating concern among the toys. Rex’s anxious exclamation, “Extinction, not again!”, underscores the central conflict can classic toys endure in a tech-saturated environment? Lilypad’s advanced functions, including translation and transcription, further alarm the toy gang.
Jessie contacts Woody via walkie-talkie to confirm whether the digital takeover is occurring elsewhere, prompting Woody and Buzz to reunite and confront the new technological rival.
The film reunites franchise veterans including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, Annie Potts, Bonnie Hunt, Kristen Schaal, Ernie Hudson, and Keanu Reeves.
New voice actors joining the project include Craig Robinson, Shelby Rabara, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Matty Matheson, and Greta Lee as Lilypad.
Toy Story 5 is scheduled to premiere on 19 June 2026. Director Andrew Stanton described the film as both humorous and emotionally resonant, examining how legacy toys adapt to a modern, technology-driven world and exploring the evolving nature of childhood play in the digital era.
