Apple plans to turn Siri into AI chatbot in iOS 27

Apple is preparing to bring major artificial intelligence upgrades to the iPhone after falling behind rivals in built-in AI features over recent years. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is planning a significant overhaul of Siri with the release of iOS 27, expected in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18.

The update will transform Siri into a full AI-powered chatbot, similar to tools like ChatGPT. Apple is expected to unveil the new version at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June before rolling it out across iPhones, iPads and Macs.

With the new system, Siri will be able to search the internet, generate AI images, analyze files and use personal data such as calendars and text messages to help users complete tasks through a chat-style interface. AI features are also expected to be added to apps such as Music, Podcasts and Mail, though it is not yet clear whether users will be able to turn these features off.

The AI-powered Siri project has reportedly faced delays and is now scheduled for launch in late 2026. This has put Apple behind competitors like Google and Samsung, which already offer advanced AI tools on their devices. Reports also suggest Apple may rely on Google’s Gemini technology to power the new Siri experience.

Despite entering the AI race later than others, Apple’s massive global user base could help it quickly catch up once the revamped Siri becomes available.
