Is A$AP Rocky considering a run for NYC mayor in 2029? Rapper addresses political ambitions

A$AP Rocky has suggested that a future run for New York City mayor is not out of the question, telling Esquire that he is considering entering local politics ahead of the 2029 election.

The rapper, fashion figure and actor raised the possibility during an interview published on Wednesday, when asked whether politics could be part of his future. “For sure,” he said. “I think so, there are a lot of political affairs that need to be addressed, changes that need to be made. I think that I would really do well because I’m a guy that’s for the people.”

Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, pointed to everyday issues affecting New Yorkers, including infrastructure problems and rising living costs. He referenced potholes, increased public transport fares, inflation, reduced SNAP benefits and access to healthcare as areas he believes require urgent attention. “See potholes, fix ’em. The rates for the trains, like the train fare just went up to $3 — it’s f***ing crazy. Inflation is crazy,” he said.

He also highlighted the need for improved welfare support, job creation and better healthcare, explaining that these issues resonate with him personally. “SNAP and welfare and foot stamps and all of these benefits is f***ed up because that’s where I derive from,” he said. “Creating more job opportunities, create better health care.”

Rocky contrasted his own financial independence with what he described as the self-interest that can shape political decision-making. He said many politicians make promises without following through, adding that his career has allowed him to make a living without relying on politics. “For me, I make a really great living off being myself,” he said.

He concluded by encouraging voters to back him if he decides to run, stating, “2029 vote for Mayor Mayers. Vote for Rocky.” The comments come as New York’s current mayor, Zohran Mamdani, begins his first term following his 2025 election victory.
