Today at Developer Direct, we got our first in-depth look at Fable, the open-world, action-RPG “new beginning” for a truly legendary Xbox series and learned that it will arrive this Autumn.

From a specially created team at Playground Games (Forza Horizon), this huge, ambitious, and hilarious game aims to honor the essence of Fable while providing a fresh perspective for both veterans and new players.
During Developer Direct, we explored story beginnings, saw combat in action, confirmed character customization, discovered the reimagined morality system, and glimpsed Albion’s living, breathing population of unique NPCs.
Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, explained that this iteration is a “new beginning,” independent of the original trilogy’s timeline. “We wanted the freedom to build our own Albion and tell our own story,” Fulton said. While retaining the spirit of the original games, Playground’s Fable embraces a fresh vision.
Fulton emphasizes Fable’s identity: intimate, whimsical stories about ordinary people touched by magic, enriched by British humor. Players are free to shape their hero, explore Albion, and experience consequences unique to their choices.

The morality system is subjective reputation is earned based on actions witnessed by NPCs, affecting relationships, commerce, and social dynamics across the world.
Players begin as a child discovering their powers, then leap to adulthood in their village, Briar Hill. After a mysterious stranger petrifies their village, the quest begins.
The open-world design encourages exploration players can go anywhere, pursue side quests, or even settle down, with no forced path dictating progression.
Combat merges melee, ranged, and magic fluidly, with enemies exhibiting tactical diversity. Player creativity is rewarded, and emergent scenarios like accidental friendly fire add chaos and humor, a hallmark of the franchise.

Albion’s NPCs are fully dynamic, with unique routines, roles, and personalities. Reputation systems track actions differently in each settlement, shaping player interactions, romance potential, prices, and social responses. Players have freedom to manipulate or embrace these reputations, creating a truly personalized experience.
The game’s comedic tone draws from quintessentially British comedies like The Office and Peep Show. Mockumentary-style storytelling allows jokes and character details to integrate naturally into gameplay. Fulton assures that further details about the cast, quests, and social-economic systems will be revealed closer to launch.
