Iran declares three days of mourning for martyrs

Tehran has announced three days of national mourning for those it describes as “martyrs” killed during two weeks of unrest across the country, including members of the security forces.

State media reported that at least 100 security personnel have been killed in recent days. Opposition activists, however, say the death toll is significantly higher and includes dozens of protesters.

The announcement comes as tensions rise between Iran and the United States. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned that Washington has “very strong options” regarding Iran, saying the US military is closely monitoring the situation while his administration remains in contact with Iranian opposition leaders.

In response, Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned that any US intervention would be met with retaliation. He said American military forces and shipping in the region would be considered “legitimate targets.”

The unrest and the exchange of warnings have heightened concerns about a potential escalation between Tehran and Washington, as protests and security operations continue inside Iran.
