‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ sets theaters release in November

The sequel to the unexpected hit Godzilla Minus One now has a release date for North American theaters. Godzilla Minus Zero will hit theaters on November 6 through distributor GKids, following its release in Japan by Toho on November 3.

So far, no casting details have been shared. The first movie was set in post-World War II Japan and focused on Kamikaze pilot Koichi, played by Ryunokuke Kamiki. Koichi struggles with shame after surviving a mission he was expected to die in, but eventually finds redemption as he helps Japan confront the monster known as Godzilla.T

Godzilla Minus One was one of the surprise successes of 2023. Made on a $15 million budget, it earned $113 million worldwide and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, marking the first Academy Award in the franchise’s 70-year history. The film received praise across Hollywood, with Steven Spielberg among its fans.

It also became the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film in North America. The original color version was released in December 2023, followed by a black-and-white version in January 2024.

Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, part of the team that won the VFX Oscar, returns to direct the sequel. Reflecting on the Oscar win, Yamazaki said, “So far from Hollywood, even the possibility of standing on this stage seemed out of reach. The moment we were nominated, we felt like Rocky Balboa welcomed into the ring as equals by our biggest rivals, which was already a miracle. But, here we stand!”
