No talks as govt moves on after PTI committee exits

.

ISLAMABAD:

The government has whirred into action to contain the parliamentary fallout of PTI senators’ mass resignations from Senate standing committees, activating a contingency plan to keep legislative oversight functioning, it emerged on Friday.

The government also decided against reopening negotiations with the opposition lawmakers who stepped aside earlier this year.

The resignations, carried out on the instructions of PTI founder Imran Khan, who remains incarcerated, had left several committees short of members and without chairpersons. PTI senators quit all their respective standing committees in protest against the ex-premier’s detention and the “disintegration of democratic norms” following the disqualification of PTI lawmakers.

Against this backdrop, the government has begun implementing ‘Plan B’, which entails a set of procedural measures to ensure that committee work continues despite the absence of PTI members.
