Cracked lips in Cold Weather? Doctors reveal the right care

Dry and cracked lips are a common problem during winter, and most people blame cold weather or lack of water for it. However, health experts say the issue is not always caused by dry air alone.

According to medical professionals, winter can make lip problems worse, sometimes even leading to painful cracks and sores. One of the major hidden reasons behind dry lips is a lack of essential vitamins and minerals in the body, especially B-complex vitamins.

Experts explain that a deficiency of vitamins such as B2 (riboflavin), B3, B6, and B12 can cause a condition known as angular cheilitis, which leads to cracked corners of the lips, dryness, and irritation. In addition, a lack of vitamin C can weaken the skin, making lips more prone to cracking.

Vitamin B12 is particularly important as it helps in the production of red blood cells. Its deficiency may also cause anemia, numbness, tingling sensations, and memory problems.

To prevent these issues, doctors emphasize the importance of a balanced diet. Foods such as milk, yogurt, eggs, legumes, green leafy vegetables, meat, chickpeas, dry fruits, and citrus fruits like oranges should be included in daily meals.

Experts also advise taking B-complex supplements only after consulting a doctor. For external care, using lip balm or petroleum jelly several times a day can help protect lips from dryness. Staying well-hydrated by drinking enough water is equally important, even during the winter season.
