Tbilisi: Georgia’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili has been moved back to prison after spending almost three years in a private clinic for medical treatment.

According to local media, Saakashvili was transferred to the clinic in May 2022 for long-term care. The country’s prison authorities said his health has now improved and he no longer requires hospital treatment.

In an official statement, officials confirmed that Saakashvili has been discharged from the clinic and shifted to Prison No. 12, where he will continue serving his sentence under normal prison rules.

Saakashvili, who once led Georgia and later faced several criminal charges, was sentenced for illegally crossing the border. His sentence is expected to continue until 2034.

Authorities said the decision to return him to prison was made after medical experts declared his condition stable.
