Disney likely to cancel ‘Tron’ franchise as Jared Leto’s ‘Ares’ underperforms worldwide

The film, which cost $180 million to produce, earned $33.2 million in the US and $27 million overseas
Tron: Ares has opened to disappointing numbers, raising doubts about both the future of Disney’s long-running sci-fi franchise and Jared Leto’s position as a leading man.
The film, which cost at least $180 million to produce, earned just $33.2 million domestically and $27 million overseas in its opening weekend, for a global total of $60.2 million. The result fell well below expectations and left industry observers questioning whether the Tron series will continue.
Sources within Disney reportedly anticipated limited appeal beyond the core fanbase. The movie’s weak audience turnout among younger male viewers, combined with a modest B+ CinemaScore, has led to speculation that Tron could be retired from theatrical release. One studio insider commented, “No one asked for this reboot.”
Leto, who starred as Ares and served as producer, had heavily promoted the film through elaborate stunts, including a dramatic appearance at the London premiere. However, the spectacle failed to translate into box office momentum.
The actor’s recent projects, including Morbius, have also struggled commercially, leading to uncertainty over his future as a bankable franchise lead. Additonally, Leto faces renewed scrutiny over past allegations of inappropriate behaviour, which his representatives have denied.
While Leto is set to appear next as Skeletor in Masters of the Universe, the weak response to Tron: Ares could mark the end of Disney’s ambitions for the once-promising series.
