Rashid Khan faces backlash over heated moment with Pakistani umpire

DUBAI: Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan has come under scrutiny after a video surfaced showing him involved in a tense exchange with Pakistani umpire Faisal Afridi following his team’s defeat to Bangladesh. The incident has drawn widespread attention on social media, prompting calls for disciplinary action.

The altercation occurred moments after Afghanistan suffered a disappointing loss in a crucial match. In the viral footage, Rashid Khan appears visibly frustrated as he approaches umpire Faisal Afridi and engages in a seemingly heated conversation. While the video lacks clear audio, the animated gestures have led to criticism from fans and commentators, who believe the captain’s behavior was inappropriate.

The video has sparked debate online, with many users expressing concern over the Afghan captain’s conduct.

“Rashid Khan’s frustration after the match is understandable, but taking it out on the umpire is not justifiable,” wrote Imran Siddiqui, who shared the footage on platform X.

Nibraz Ramzan commented, “Incidents like these tarnish the image of Afghan cricket. Rashid Khan is clearly seen arguing with the umpire this deserves attention from ICC.”

The Afghanistan team, which had been under pressure to perform, appeared visibly disappointed following their loss to Bangladesh. However, observers have pointed out that on-field decorum must be upheld, regardless of match outcomes. Rashid Khan, known for his competitive spirit, is now facing criticism for not maintaining the expected level of sportsmanship.

Umpire Faisal Afridi did not respond publicly to the incident, and there has been no official statement from either team management or match officials. However, sources suggest that tournament authorities are reviewing the footage as part of their standard post-match reporting process.

As the tournament progresses, questions are being raised about player conduct and the responsibilities of captains to lead by example both on and off the field. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to comment on whether the matter will be taken up formally.
