Hosted by celebrity chef Ranveer Brar, Star vs Food Survival season 2 takes viewers on an exhilarating journey with celebrities tackling survival challenges in some of India’s most remote landscapes.
Fan-favorite culinary adventure series, Star vs Food Survivalis back with Season 2, premiered on 28th October 2024 at 9:00 PM on Discovery Channel and discovery+. Chef Ranveer shares his insights with us about this season’s unique blend of survival and culinary adventure.
What inspired you to bring a survival element to a culinary show, and how has this changed the experience for you as a chef and host?
I believe, the very necessity for cooking food in any and every form, arose out of a need to survive and healthily so. From using Fire, to cooking mediums in various materials, from ingredients to processing them, the evolution of cooking has been a fascinating journey for mankind. Star vs Food Survival is a tribute to this evolution.
Additionally, it’s also a part of who I am and my upbringing. I have grown up in a farm, lived that life, as also experienced a ‘Fauji upbringing’. I’ve been around nature, around ingredients, which invariably became genetically encoded into me.
Each region in India has such unique ingredients and culinary traditions. How do you incorporate local flavors into these survival challenges while ensuring the dishes remain approachable for the celebrities?
That’s something I have picked up from my travels, how each region and its cuisine honour and use local ingredients to their advantage. Hence it was quite natural for me to slip into the same role while putting on my chef hat to incorporate the elements into a unique preparation, easy, rustic and local.
The locations this season are breathtaking but also seem incredibly challenging.
What were some of the biggest surprises or unexpected hurdles you and the stars faced while filming?
One that comes to mind right away…losing our way in Meghalaya with Munawar was unexpected. We were supposed to follow the stream one way, but we ended up following it the other way and had to spend the night in a cave. That wasn’t part of the plan!
We had nothing to eat and had to improvise. We boiled Silkworms to eat! Silkworms are a classic delicacy, but it was a challenge for Munawar. We had to catch live crabs and Munawar got bit by one of them! So yep, challenging and interesting to say the least.
Plus it started raining, that made things more challenging, in addition to grappling with the difficult terrain.
You’ve worked with a range of personalities on the show, from actors to athletes and comedians. How did each of them bring something unique to their culinary survival journey?
Pushing one’s boundaries is what this show is primarily about. The personalities I have collaborated with for this show have been very sportive and willing to take on challenges, culinary or otherwise, and this shows in the episodes. For instance, this season has Kartik Aryan climbing down a well to retrieve the ‘Mystery Potli’. Munawar and me spending the night in a cave, Shriya conquering her fear of Fire and Darkness. Overall, this season I feel, goes a notch above the last one.
What do you hope viewers will take away from watching the stars step out of their comfort zones and embrace cooking in such rugged, natural settings?
I hope the audience will appreciate that life cannot always be planned, that one must be prepared to face the twists and just be ready to turn them to one’s advantage. Once you learn to go with the flow instead of resisting, one would realise that any challenge can actually be a blessing in disguise.
