‘The Batman Part II’ to begin filming in spring 2026

Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that “The Batman Part II” will begin filming in spring 2026, with a theatrical release set for October 1, 2027.

The update was shared in the company’s Q2 shareholder letter, which also outlined upcoming projects under DC Studios co-head James Gunn.

After a long wait, director Matt Reeves has completed the script for the sequel, which officially entered pre-production in June. Robert Pattinson returns as Gotham’s Dark Knight, with Colin Farrell reprising his role as The Penguin—tying directly into the HBO Max spinoff series centered on the character.

Originally scheduled for a 2025 release, the film was delayed due to development and writing timelines. Gunn addressed the delay earlier, calling multi-year gaps between superhero sequels “fairly common” and praised Reeves’ methodical storytelling process.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in July, Gunn revealed he had read the finished script and offered his approval: “I like it. We’re headed in the right direction.” He acknowledged there are still a few details to work out, but remains confident in the film’s trajectory.

Reeves confirmed script completion in late June by sharing a photo of the screenplay cover—featuring a bat emblem—on social media.

Gunn also addressed fan frustration over the delay in a past interview: “Let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. He doesn’t owe you something because you liked his movie. You liked it because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
