Renowned Korean actor Gong Yoo, known for his role in the globally popular Netflix series ‘Squid Game’, has been acquitted of defamation charges based on false harassment accusations. A South Korean court has, in turn, sentenced the woman who made the false claims.
According to foreign media reports, the South Korean court on July 29th sentenced a 40-year-old woman (whose identity has not been revealed) to six months in prison for making false harassment claims.
The woman was found guilty of spreading false information and violating the Information Network Protection Act.
Korean media reported that between January 2020 and March 2021, the woman posted false accusations and defamatory comments on social media 235 times, alleging that Gong Yoo had harassed and threatened her.
However, investigations conclusively proved that Gong Yoo had no personal connection with the woman, and all the allegations were baseless and false.
In its ruling, the court stated that the woman’s accusations were “completely unfounded” and, furthermore, she “repeatedly spread false information for a long period.”
Following the court’s decision, social media users and fans have expressed widespread support for Gong Yoo, endorsing the legal action taken against false accusations.
