LAHORE: In a historic milestone for Pakistan Railways, Lahore’s Nida Saleh Malik has become the country’s first-ever female train driver.
Fulfilling a childhood dream, Nida’s dedication, perseverance, and passion have shattered long-standing gender barriers in a traditionally male‑dominated profession.
Nida, who nurtured a fascination for locomotives from an early age, said the path to her achievement was not without challenges. “Initially, my family was opposed to the idea of me becoming a train driver,” she recalled. “But once they saw my commitment, everyone rallied behind me.”
Her appointment marks a significant step forward for gender equality within Pakistan’s transportation sector and serves as an inspiring example for young women nationwide. Nida intends to use her platform to encourage other women to pursue careers in non‑traditional fields.
