Instagram glitch replaces real friends with AI Chatbots

In a strange and frustrating turn of events, a glitch on Instagram caught users around the world off guard by replacing their friends’ names with the label “AI.” The unexpected change made it nearly impossible to tell real contacts apart from artificial intelligence, leading to confusion and widespread complaints.

The issue first surfaced on Reddit, where users began sharing screenshots of their contact lists showing every name replaced with the word “AI.” Although profile pictures remained the same, the name switch caused major problems—especially for simple tasks like messaging or sharing videos. Many users had to resort to manually copying and pasting links just to communicate.

One frustrated Reddit user wrote, “I can’t locate any of my friends. They’re all just AI. This is outrageous.” Others chimed in with similar concerns, calling the app “unusable.”

Interestingly, the glitch appeared alongside a message within the app stating, “AI chats are not yet available to everyone,” which led to speculation. Some users believe the issue may be tied to Meta’s internal testing for upcoming AI features on Instagram. However, Meta, which owns Instagram, has not yet released an official explanation or confirmed any link between the error and planned updates.

This isn’t the first time Instagram’s use of AI has raised concerns. Back in June, users reported sudden account bans without explanation, prompting criticism over Instagram’s reliance on automated moderation. Digital rights advocates are now calling on Meta to conduct more transparent testing and involve the public before rolling out new AI tools.

While some users later reported that their contact lists returned to normal, others said the problem persisted. For now, no one knows the exact cause—and the glitch has left users wondering what other AI-related surprises Instagram might roll out next.
