KARACHI: The Karachi may witness light rain or drizzle today, with humid and partly cloudy conditions expected to persist over the next 24 hours.
Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast for widespread heavy rains across several regions of Pakistan from today until July 10th.
According to the PMD, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Pothohar region are expected to receive torrential downpours.
This could lead to flash floods in the nullahs and rivers of certain parts of Punjab and Balochistan, with a risk of urban flooding in the low-lying areas of Nowshera and Peshawar.
The PMD also warned of potential landslides in hilly areas between July 6th and 8th. However, this weather system is not expected to bring further rain to Sindh including Karachi.
Furthermore, according to the Meteorological Department, there’s a risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to melting glaciers. Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to take necessary precautions.
On the other hand, monsoon showers persist across several districts of Balochistan, with the second spell of the season officially underway from today.
According to the Meteorological Department, recent downpours have drenched areas including Barkhan, Kohlu, and Khuzdar. Since last night, Barkhan has recorded 17 mm of rainfall, while Khuzdar received 6 mm.
Authorities warn of potential flash floods and urban flooding due to rising water levels in streams and nullahs.
